Schatrax – Overcome
This makes me very melancolic.
Just want to hear this one in the morning, preferably in Berlin, or in a car, at night, driving through abandoned places.

I know what you’re thinking. “Mash-ups? – Been there done that.” You’re right. And still, this album of Wait What is one of the best things I’ve heard this year. Basically Wait What took the sounds of the XX’s debut album and put Biggie’s verses on top of it. The whole album was made available for free download on March 25th here, the 13 year anniversary of Life After Death’s release.

One of the stand-out tracks is this ‘Suicidial Fantasy’. Not only you hear how deep some of the XX’s basslines go (check the original ‘Fantasy’ here), but you also hear how dark some of Biggie’s lyrics actually were. (Check Biggie’s ‘Suidical Thoughts’ here. Earlier Whizz posted the Lorn remix of the same Biggie song here.)
The stress is buildin’ up, I can’t,
I can’t believe suicide’s on my fuckin’ mind
I want to leave, I swear to God I feel like death is fuckin’ callin’ me
Naw you wouldn’t understand
You see its kinda like the crack did to Pookie, in New Jack
Except when I cross over, there ain’t no comin’ back
Should I die on the train track, like Remo in Beatstreet
People at the funeral frontin’ like they miss me
My baby momma kissed me but she glad I’m gone
She knew me and her sista had somethin’ goin’ on
I reach my peak, I can’t speak,
call my nigga Chic, tell him that my will is weak.
I’m sick of niggas lyin’, I’m sick of bitches hawkin’,
matter of fact, I’m sick of talkin’.
Playhouse reprints the ‘number one’ album of the last decade (according to Resident Advisor): ‘Alcachofa’ by Ricardo Villalobos. ‘Dexter’ was one of the tracks that brought me more into the slower bpm spectrum of electronic music (I was quite an adept of 165+ bpm music). A well deserved winner of that poll, what an album.
Put on your headphones for this one. The details in this track are so lovely you need to hear them fully concentrated. ‘Yulquen’ featured on Autechre‘s album ‘Amber’ from 1994, and is my favourite track of that album. Again, melancholy is the main emotion here, like in most of my favourite music.
Somebody should make a nice video for this track, it’s made for some visuals!
I get so mixed up by hearing this track. It makes me feel positive, however the whole mood is in an unspoken way very sad. Its bassline tells a story of forgotten passion and lonely endless sights. Somewhere in the middle, the story turns out to be quite positive as hope flickers from the changed bassline. But troubled memories return near the end of the track.
Best served next to Triola‘s ‘Leuchtturm’ and Psychonauts ‘The Worlds Keeps Turning (Highfish & Zander remix)), like in Superpitcher’s Today mix album. Timeless!
Our friends at Unrezt / Thin Consolation released a new EP by Odaka (also known as Rawakari). The title track is just lovely. Its warm bassline carries the heartbeat of a puzzled mind, doubting between dancing or thinking. The beat+bass invites him to the dancefloor, but somewhere between those melodic pads, the loneliness awaits. Highly recommended.
Great track from UK artist Irrelevant. The bass melody is gloomy, but the vocals and strings shed a bit of light in the deep depths of “Echoes”. Be sure to check out his soundcloud account, because he has some other nice tracks there. Recommended!
Some mellow 2-step track from Pariah (not to be confused with the Pariah from the mid 90′s releasing stuff on Good Looking). Although this reminds me of Burial and SYNKRO, I can get enough of this kind of music. Lovely…
