Hudson Mohawke – Cbat
New release by Theophilus London, and it’s lovely cheesy. The disco-sounding beat is adapted to align with the track’s sunny and sleazy speed, Theophilus’s flow and voice do remind of LL Cool J, and the contribution of Solange Knowles is more than appreciated. Summer tune of winter 2010!
PS: love the outfits!
PS 2: you can download this track for free at Green Label Sound!
We already covered ‘Steptoe‘ by Calibre last year, and now we present you another track from his new album ‘Even if’. I didn’t choose for a classic drum ‘n’ bass (nothing refreshing to be honest). This Thirst Dub is the opposite of drum’n'bass. The bass rolls at 170bpm, the beats take it more slowly at half the speed. Bass alert!
After Lorn‘s album, Brainfeeder serves us the debut album ‘Ardour’ by Teebs. The album is available in stores since today. My pick is this dreamy ‘Arthurs’ Bird’. Teebs‘ beats make the airy bells & synths pulsate slowly, creating a hazy and hypnotizing atmosphere.
You can download two free tracks at Pitchfork.
I had never heard of this producer, but apparently he’s doing his thing already for more than 10 years in California. ‘Neon Beams’ is a perfect slice of uplifting space-age funk. For fans of Nosaj Thing and Flying Lotus. Download the track (320kbs) for free here.
I know what you’re thinking. “Mash-ups? – Been there done that.” You’re right. And still, this album of Wait What is one of the best things I’ve heard this year. Basically Wait What took the sounds of the XX’s debut album and put Biggie’s verses on top of it. The whole album was made available for free download on March 25th here, the 13 year anniversary of Life After Death’s release.

One of the stand-out tracks is this ‘Suicidial Fantasy’. Not only you hear how deep some of the XX’s basslines go (check the original ‘Fantasy’ here), but you also hear how dark some of Biggie’s lyrics actually were. (Check Biggie’s ‘Suidical Thoughts’ here. Earlier Whizz posted the Lorn remix of the same Biggie song here.)
The stress is buildin’ up, I can’t,
I can’t believe suicide’s on my fuckin’ mind
I want to leave, I swear to God I feel like death is fuckin’ callin’ me
Naw you wouldn’t understand
You see its kinda like the crack did to Pookie, in New Jack
Except when I cross over, there ain’t no comin’ back
Should I die on the train track, like Remo in Beatstreet
People at the funeral frontin’ like they miss me
My baby momma kissed me but she glad I’m gone
She knew me and her sista had somethin’ goin’ on
I reach my peak, I can’t speak,
call my nigga Chic, tell him that my will is weak.
I’m sick of niggas lyin’, I’m sick of bitches hawkin’,
matter of fact, I’m sick of talkin’.
‘Come and get it’ is the newest single of Dutch hiphop-outfit La Melodia, and I’m digging the sleezy bass in this one. Think Ursula Rucker with a Platinum Pied Pipers/Dilla vibe.
agreed! strakke biets en mellow vibe van de hiphop van weleer.
Lovely!
Another tune from DJ Morpheus‘s ‘Freezone 2′ compilation. A classic DJ Cam tune, on Yellow Productions (label from Chris The French Kiss, yes, that’s Bob Sinclar). Beautiful laid-back summertune, love it to the bone.
The tune samples Dexter Wansel, Lady Miss Kier from Deee-Lite, Quincy Jones, and more (if you know more samples, leave a message!)
This mash-up is also brilliant: DMX vs THe XX! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X9dl5_pwKQ
