We’ve been a huge fan of Martijn Deykers, even before his artist name was Martyn. His drum’n'bass DJ sets as DJ Pan were legendary, just as the RedZone parties he organized in Eindhoven. After the release of ‘Great Lengths‘ in 2009, our expectations were high for his second album ‘Ghost People‘. As you see, we’ve put the title track on number 6, which proves he met all expectations! It’s a fantastic album, and more dance floor orientated. Which makes it more focussed and more coherent than Great Lengths.

We had Viper and Masks on the blog this year.

I haven’t dug deep in the Detroit music history yet, that’s next on my to-do list for this year . However, I still remember this tune featured on an old techno-compilation. ‘The Climax’ takes a while to build-up (hence the title I guess), but it’s ten minutes pure bliss.

History lesson, Detroit meets Ghent: Model 500 on R&S records. It’s frankly amazing how relevant this track from the legendary group surrounding Juan Atkins sounds today.

As a little extra, Model 500′s No UFOs performed on Detroit’s New Dance Show in 1986 (!). We were still in our nappies and these people were already busting moves to heavy stomping beats!

After it issued that brilliant Jacob Korn tune, Dolly now releases ‘Redbox’ by old time Dutch favourite Dexter. Expect Detroit oriented dancefloor old school house with a killer synth on this B-side. As Boomkat says: “It’s hard to this sort of pure club track justice in words, you need to feel this in situ and you’ll know the craic.” Damn right baby.

Jacob Korn – Grosskariert

We’re loving Jacob Korn here at the Worldsbelow100Hz (check out the comments to an earlier post with music of the man from Dresden here), so let’s bring this guy again to your attention. ‘Grosskariert’ was released late last year on the terminally hip Permanent Vacation label on the nicely titled ‘If this is house, I want my money back’ compilation. This tune has D-E-T-R-O-I-T stamped on its forehead and I would go completely nuts on the dancefloor hearing this one out loud. Only after I discovered this tune I realised that Martyn picked up the tune for his XLR8R podcast as well, which shows again that there are no boundaries when it comes to good music in the world below 100hz.

As his Motor City Drum Ensemble moniker implies, Stuttgart’s Danilo Plessow is a fan of classic Detroit techno, but, as December 2009 ‘Stuttgart Nights’ and this exclusive mix at XLR8R show, the man also has an affinity for old-school Chicago house, not to mention vintage soul and disco. Through his Raw Cuts series and releases on the Four Roses label, Plessow has developed a hypnotic deep house sound that simultaneously reveres the past while remaining clearly focused on the future.
